Here is some of the gear I use to make my show. I did a lot of research to see what other podcasters were using and made sure to pick gear that was high quality, but reasonably priced.

The Yeti USB microphone is a favorite among podcasters. I chose this bundle that replaces the usual desk stand with a very nice swing arm stand with a clamp for desk mounting. These is also a nice shock mount made specifically for the microphone.

My laptop had a really nice webcam, but it didn’t offer much control on where to place it. Also, with my set up, I didn’t have many options for placing a key light.  This Razer Kiyo webcam offered a relatively inexpensive solution to both problems. It offers 1020p HD/30fps  or a 720p HD/60 fps recording, and a built-in adjustable ring light.

This tool has been very helpful. I don’t actually do streaming, which is what it is made for, but you can program the buttons to work with a variety of different programs. So I use it with my editing software. I use it with Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Audacity, Word… just about everything!

I always wanted a green screen. You aren’t going to be recreating Avengers: Infinity War in your living room with this, but it is perfect for a single host podcast. It’s very easy to pop up and fold away with no worry about wrinkles like cheaper green screens. So it is plenty big for my use, but check the size carefully and see if it will fit your needs. Also, to work best you’ll want to have a dark room behind this so light doesn’t shine through.

This ring light is very powerful and dimmable, great for still or video photography. There are smaller versions that aren’t as powerful if size is an issue. It comes with two different color temp diffusers, a tripod, and a nice carry bag. It even came with a cell phone holder bracket! This tripod/light stand (like the ones below) isn’t super heavy duty. So they wouldn’t be good for rough duty, but if you take care of your gear and mainly want them for a home studio you should be fine. They are very nice and light which is great if you don’t want to lug around a heavy light kit.

You’ll want this kit to light up your green screen or to shoot interviews. Nice powerful, adjustable, LED light kit. Inexpensive, but does the job. Also comes with tripods and a carry bags. These plug into the wall outlet, but you can buy optional battery packs to make them more portable. There are single lights as well as three or more light packages, depending on your particular needs.

This is a slim, light-weight portable battery powered LED light that can fit on your still or video camera. It can also be mounted from your ceiling to create a hair light to help make a subject pop from their background. It comes with a rechargeable battery pack and a charger.

This is an inexpensive pop filter that you would want to place in front of your microphone to soften your plosives. There is a nice pop filter made specifically for the Yeti mic, it would fit on the Yeti’s unique desktop stand, but since I ordered the microphone without the stand I could use any standard, less expensive quality option. Naturally after it arrived my wife reminded me I already had two pop filters still new in the box. How am I supposed to remember something like that?

SOFTWARE:

Audacity is great FREE audio recording software. My friends and I used it to record twelve years worth of podcasts. Also, the narrator of my audiobooks uses Audacity. Give it a try!

OBS Studio is great FREE video creation software, like Audacity, there are a lot of resources available online to teach you how to use it. Many people use it to stream on Twitch. And it allows you to use a green screen! How cool is that?

DaVinci RESOLVE is FREE Pro level software tools for video editing, mastering audio, video color correction, and effects compositing. Unbelievably versatile and powerful for free software, you will need to upgrade to the paid STUDIO version if you want to edit in 4K.

I highly recommend Scrivener! It’s powerful and inexpensive. Way more than just a word processor, Scrivener allows you to work with virtual index cards and a cork board to help organize your plot. It’s a great tool for working with large or complicated writing projects like epic fantasy or non fiction books. You can also use it to write movie or comicbook scripts. I like it because it works the way I think, so I really feel it helps me keep my story organized and flowing.
